PEMDAS
Introduction to PEMDAS
PEMDAS is an acronym that helps you remember the order of operations in math, ensuring that calculations are performed correctly. It stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction. Following this order prevents errors and ensures consistent results when solving mathematical expressions.
What Does PEMDAS Stand For?
- P – Parentheses: Solve expressions inside parentheses or brackets first.
- Example: In (3 + 2) × 4 calculate 3 + 2 first.
- E – Exponents: Next, solve any exponents or powers.
- Example: In 32+4 calculate 32=9.
- Example: In 32+4 calculate 32=9.
- MD – Multiplication and Division: Perform these from left to right, whichever comes first.
- Example: In 6 × 3 ÷ 26 you multiply 6×3=18 first, then divide by 2.
- AS – Addition and Subtraction: Lastly, perform addition and subtraction from left to right.
- Example: In 10 − 3 + 2, subtract first: 10 − 3 =7, then add 2.
Example Problem:
Problem: Solve 8 + ( 5 × 2 )− 32
Solution:
- Parentheses: 5 × 2 = 10.
- Exponents: 32= 9
- Addition and Subtraction: 8 + 10 − 9 = 9
Answer: The final result is 9.
